XJTLU PhD Studentship – Monster Tales: The Abnormal in Imperial China
| The Department of China Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University invites applications from suitably-qualified candidates for a full-time PhD scholarship in the field of Chinese classical literature. The successful candidate will consider the cultural significance of the “monster” in traditional China through an analysis of the so-called zhiguai 志怪 tales or “accounts of the strange”. The project assigned to the doctoral candidate will complement the one undertaken by Dr Loredana Cesarino and Prof David Goodman titled “Monster Tales: The Abnormal in Imperial China”, yet the student will be required to undertake his/her own independent research by focusing on a period of his/her choice between the Six Dynasties, the Tang/Song era (preferred) and the Qing dynasty. |
| Degree: The student will be awarded a PhD degree from the University of Liverpool (UK) upon successful completion of the program. |
| Funding notes: The PhD studentship is available for three years, subject to satisfactory progress by the student. The award covers tuition fees for three years (currently equivalent to RMB 80,000 per annum) and provides a monthly stipend of 5000 RMB as a contribution to living expenses. It also provides up to RMB 16,500 to allow participation at international conferences during the period of the award. It is a condition of the award that holders of XJTLU PhD scholarships carry out 300-500 hours of teaching assistance work per year. The scholarship holder is expected to carry out the major part of his or her research at XJTLU in Suzhou, China. However, he or she is eligible for a research study visit to the University of Liverpool of up to three months, if this is required by the project. |

CALL FOR PAPERS: La Cina imperiale e le Vie della Seta: viaggi, circolazioni e scambi.
Viaggiatori dedica un intero numero agli scambi socio-culturali, economici e scientifici sviluppatesi attraverso questi percorsi che hanno come punto di riferimento la Cina imperiale dalla dinastia Han alla caduta dell’imperoQing, all’inizio del XX secolo.
Le proposte d’articolo, di non più di due cartelle (4400 battute complessive) e redatte in italiano, oppure in inglese o francese, devono essere indirizzate, accompagnate da un breve profilo biografico dell’autore, alla redazione della rivista (direzione@viaggiatorijournal.com; segreteriaredazione@viaggiatorijournal.com) entro il 31 ottobre 2018Saranno valutate secondo il sistema del double blind peer review.Qing, all’inizio del XX secolo. |

CUHK – PhD position on “Yijing studies in European societies”

| Qualification: The student must have a master’s degree in History, Chinese studies or related fields. |
| Dissertation: The student will complete a PhD dissertation on “Yijing studies in European societies” (such as translations of the Yijing or the impact of Yijing studies in European societies) in four years. The student will be enrolled at CityU and will reside in HK. |
Fellowship: If admitted by City University of Hong Kong, the student will receive the following
The Postgraduate Studentship rate for 2019/20 is around HK$16,500 per month. Studentship is subject to revision in September of every year, and any revision to the rate will apply to both current and new students, but the student needs to pay tuition fee at HK$3,508 per month. Research students can apply for conference grants for attending local and overseas conferences. The maximum value of a grant is HK$10,000. Studentship recipients are normally required to undertake not more than 10 hours per week on average of teaching and/or research support duties, as assigned by the Department/School. They shall not engage in any paid employment without the prior approval of the University.
The student can apply for the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowships of the Hong Kong government. The Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (~US$2,564) and conference and research related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (~US$1,282) per year for the awardees.
