Zhou Qingyun (1865–1933) and His Supplement to the History of the Qin

This volume offers the first comprehensive scholarly study of Zhou Qingyun’s 周慶雲 (1864–1933) Qinshi bu 琴史補 (Supplement to the History of the Qin), published in 1919 and conceived as a supplement to Zhu Changwen’s 朱長文 eleventh-century Qinshi 琴史. Through a detailed examination of its biographical material and extensive source base, the study investigates Zhou’s methods of compilation, his use and transmission of earlier sources, and the broader historical and social representation of qin culture that emerges from the work. A critical introduction and extensive annotations accompany the first complete English translation of the text. Building on the author’s critical edition and translation of Zhu Changwen’s Qinshi (2023), the volume contributes to a broader reassessment of the historiographical tradition of the qin and its development across the centuries.
