This edited volume explores the educational practices and representations of children and young people in Chinese history from a multidisciplinary perspective, bringing together contributions that span from the Tang dynasty (618–907) to the Republican period (1912–1949). Through a wide range of textual, historical, visual, and pedagogical sources, the chapters examine how concepts of childhood and youth were constructed, transmitted, and transformed in response to changing social, cultural, political, and religious contexts.
The volume is the outcome of the international research project Youth in Chinese History, coordinated by Giulia Falato and Renata Vinci and supported by the British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust. Building on a collaborative network of scholars and an interdisciplinary dialogue developed over several years, the book highlights the central role of education and youth in shaping Chinese society across the imperial and early modern periods, while offering new perspectives on the intersections between pedagogical traditions, literary representations, and processes of social and cultural change.
The volume will be of interest to scholars and students working on Chinese history, education, childhood studies, literature, religion, and cultural history, as well as to anyone interested in the historical construction of childhood and youth in China.
